4/13/2018 0 Comments Bumps in the RoadSince we have been back from spring break, I have been trying to get some projects going. The pen pal program with the Ganado students wasn't as much as a success as I thought. Nicole only had a few students interested. As of now, Mia and I will write letters to those students until the school year ends to form relationships and give these kids something to look forward to. I am helping Austin and Maya with the Color Dash, which is a 3K run they are holding in New Pal. They are still thinking of programs to donate the money towards and I hope I can persuade them to do something for the Navajos!
Mia and I are picking up another project regarding kids in Africa. Right now, we are not 100% on the project idea, but we are in contact with Ashley Malloy who will help us get the project started.

3/14/2018 0 Comments Getting StartedTransitioning from the Dress Drive has been tough. Mia and I are determined to somehow make a difference in the world, and we have chosen to focus on kids in poverty. After many failed attempts at trying to start a project with homeless and inner city kids (SO DEFEATING), we kept brainstorming for something involving poverty. My brother, Mitchell, and his wife, Nicole, work on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Ganado, Arizona. Indian Reservations are extremely poor communities, and the students Mitch and Nikki work with are not as fortunate as we are here in New Pal. The high school has a very low graduation rate and many other problems. With this connection I have, Austin, Mia, and I decided to take on a project regarding this school. While it's not exactly what we had in mind, we are going to go through with it, because we want to make a difference.
I have been talking to Mitch and Nikki about possible projects we can do for them and they didn't have any ideas other than giving donations. We specifically want to work one on one with students, but they are 1,000+ miles away, which makes it difficult. We had the idea of starting a Pen Pal program with Nicole's seventh graders. This way, these kids can make personal relationships with the 'pen pal' as well as develop writing skills. While the Pen Pal Program is going on the rest of the school year, we are also going to somehow create a donation drive for Ganado. We want to do something more creative than just telling people to drop things off in a donation box. Our first idea was to hold a talent show and have people donate school supplies to get into the event, but that pretty much fell through. Another way we could get donations would be having a 5k run at NPHS. This would be fun and we can encourage people to 'run for a cause' or something motivating. When we get back from spring break, we only have a few weeks to get this project going, but I think we can get it done! |
